Helping the community centre respond to the needs of its users, the students were tasked to get a good understanding of the situation in Izmir, and come up with a proposal to transform the empty roof top.
The roof of the community centre is a large, open space which could accommodate a large number of activities for adults and children.
Tiafi requested facilities to offer women to grow and preserve seasonal vegetables. Any surplus quantities could then be sold through Tiafi giving the participants some income with profits reinvested in the programme. They also wanted to provide the children with a safe place to play. As this area is so exposed, shaded and sheltered areas would also be needed.
During the Venice Biennale of 2021 the project team spent a week in close consultation and discussion with all collaborators in order to pin down the visions, needs, principles and architectural components that would come to outline the task ahead.
The students were divided into groups for brainstorming ideas on how to utilize the roof top, which they later presented to the rest of the project team. The following images are drawings of their first work.
These ideas would then be condensed into a final proposal that would accommodate the various needs of the community centre.
The proposal consisted of sheltered gathering spaces, a sports field and playground for the kids, and a gardening area for producing food crops. All this enclosed by a structure of undulating fence of metal pipes.
Site Visit
The team made a visit to Izmir in April 2022 to finalize arrangements, gather additional information and to spend some time contributing to the community centre. During this stay, the students helped with completing the new fire escape from the roof, measuring and outlining the future intervention, as well as decorating one of the walls on the roof with a mural.
The Prototype
The students worked on making a prototype of the structures, including a manual of how to build it by hand.
The design of the structure is meant to be quite easy and possible to construct by people themselves only using simple tools. Cutting, welding, drilling and bending the metal pipes could all be done without advanced machinery.
Having completed the prototype, the project was starting to reach its finalization. The next step is to build it on site!
