The Roof Top: A Social Place
On top of the community centre a new structure will be built, expanding the programmes of Tiafi and activating the roof top with social gatherings and playful activities.
The proposal transforms the previously unused roof top into a social space for people to gather, kids to play and women to grow food crops.

The main element of the proposal is an undulating fence of mesh-covered metal pipes, which will be surrounding the roof top, creating a safer environment for the children. A small sports field is created by letting this fence separate a portion of the roof from the rest of the activities that will be going on. This fence further evolves into three main modules that each support specific needs: One large gathering structure, one smaller gathering structure, and one structure for children's play.
The structural system consists of pieces that can be combined in multiple ways to make for a possibility to assemble different kinds of modules. It was important to use materials that could be sourced from local contractors. Steel pipes are readily available in Izmir and can be used for creating adaptable and standardized structures.

It was also important to have a system that could be managed by people themselves. Each piece can be made using only simple tools by cutting, welding, drilling and bending the pipes.

Further on, the structures can be clad with various materials, creating sheltering screens, walls and roofs, that easily can be shifted, removed and replaced. The actual material of the cladding could be anything from plastic sheets, metal plates or handwoven fabric.
The roof top intervention will be constructed during the summer and autumn of 2022.
